"The Centennial State"
Granted statehood in 1876, the modern Centennial State has become a major economic force. Colorado's roots as a mining center have given way to a diverse economy based on high technology, energy, and a major federal government presence (although the agriculture and mineral resources industries are still prominent). The economic and population center of the state, Denver is home to a financial district known as the "Wall Street of the West," and the area is also home to communications giants Qwest, Starz-Encore, and Comcast.
Coloradans enjoy a per-capita income ranked 11th in the nation, and the high standard of living most experience here lends itself to a vibrant and lucrative outdoors and recreation economy. Generally fit and active, Coloradans have the lowest rate of obesity in the nation. Residents have regular access to some of the best skiing in the world in the Rocky Mountains, and the skiing and sports industry also drives Colorado's tourism economy. Politically moderate and considered a "swing" state during elections, Colorado residents are also not as religious as many Americans. A full quarter of residents don't claim religious affiliation, although Colorado Springs is home to several conservative religious groups.
