HISTORY

The official territorial anthem of Guam, "Fanohge Chamoru," is generically known as "The Guam Hymn." The official national anthem of this United States dependency is the "Star Spangled Banner," which is always played before "Fanohge Chamoru" at official occasions. The Guam Hymn, however, is played alone at international sporting competitions. The anthem was written in 1919 and describes the patriotism of Guamanians. It invokes the blessings of God over their island and asks God to protect them against "all perils." In the Chamorro language, the hymn is also known as "Kantikun Guahan" ("Song of Guam"). The lyrics were translated into Chamorro by Lagrimas Leon Guerrero Untalan in 1974, during a period when pride in the Chamorro language and culture were experiencing a resurgence. -World Trade Press
