Oregon State Song

Oregon State Song

"Oregon, My Oregon"

Lyrics: John Andrew Buchanan
Music: Henry Bernard Murtagh
Adoption: 1927

HISTORY
In 1920, a statewide competition was conducted by the Society of Oregon Composers to select a state song. The 16-lined, two-verse song, "Oregon, My Oregon" won the contest. The lyrics, written by Astoria city judge John Buchanan, honor Oregon's pioneers and early settlers and extol the natural beauty of the state. Well-known Portland musician Henry Murtagh contributed the music. The song steadily grew in popularity after being promoted by the Oregon Composers Society through performances at public functions, schools, and universities. The Oregon State Legislature designated "Oregon, My Oregon" as the official state song on February 12, 1927.  -World Trade Press
LYRICS
Land of the Empire Builders,
Land of the Golden West;
Conquered and held by free men,
Fairest and the best.
Onward and upward ever,
Forward and on, and on, and on;
Hail to thee, Land of Heroes,
My Oregon.
Land of the rose and sunshine
Land of the summer's breeze;
Laden with health and vigor,
Fresh from the Western seas.
Blest by the blood of martyrs,
Land of the setting sun;
Hail to thee, Land of Promise,
My Oregon.
