Puerto Rico Territorial Fish

Puerto Rico Territorial Fish

Dorado (common name)
Coryphaena hippurus(scientific name)

Overview

One of the world’s most popular sport fish, the dorado is a bright greenish blue above and yellow on its sides, with purple and green highlights. The fish’s distinctive and long body shape is thick at the head and tapers toward a thin and sharply forked tail. The head of the female is more sloping. A single, dark dorsal fin extends from behind the head all the way to the tail, and a thin anal fin extends from the anus to the tail.
The mouth is relatively large and contains several rows of very fine teeth. Schooling fish run in similar sizes, from one pound (450 g) to 20 pounds (8 kg). Larger fish are typically loners or pairs. The dorado is highly migratory, following the fish on which it feeds throughout the year. It is known to hunt in pairs or packs. It is a prolific spawner.
