"The First State"
"The First State" is also the second-smallest state in area and the only one not home to a National Park. Often eclipsed by its more powerful neighbors New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, tiny Delaware nevertheless has its own accomplishments to boast about. It ranks second in percentage of civil scientists and engineers, and mention of its scientific industry can't be made without reference to Delaware company DuPont, one of the world's largest chemical companies. Then there are Delaware's famous (and infamous) corporation laws: as a result of these laws, more than 60 percent of Fortune 500 companies are incorporated in the state, making it the top tax haven in the world.
Delaware's geographical boundaries are quite unique. The state's northern boundary is actually a 12-mile arc somewhat improbably known as the Twelve-Mile Circle. The state is normally thought of as a political bellwether, voting for the winning presidential candidate 50 years in a row. Another first: The Delaware Supreme Court caseBelton vs. Gebhart was the only one of four cases leading to theBrown vs. Board of Education case to actually rule segregation unconstitutional. It seems that, at least for Delaware, being small doesn't preclude thinking big.
