Welcome to Indiana

Welcome to Indiana

"The Hoosier State"

So what exactly is a Hoosier? Aside from being the official title of a resident or native of Indiana, the meaning and origin of the word is unclear. It can be traced back to the word hoozer of a Cumberland, England, dialect, which means "high" or "hill." Immigrants possibly brought the terminology with them, but several other folk explanations exist.
Whatever Hoosier might mean, Hoosiers themselves don't really pay much attention—they're too busy obsessing about sports. The state is home to the Indianapolis 500, held annually on Memorial Day weekend. Billed as the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing," it's generally regarded as one of the top three racing events in the world. The Indianapolis Colts football team, the NBA Pacers, and even high school basketball all capture massive devotion as well.
When they aren't at play, Indiana residents work primarily in manufacturing industries. Indiana boasts the largest steel-producing region in the country and the largest coal production plant in the U.S. The state is located within the Corn Belt, so agriculture also plays a large role in the economy. With low taxes and few unions, Indiana is considered quite business-friendly, so perhaps Indiana could be considered the ultimate "work hard, play hard" state.
