Welcome to Massachusetts

"The Bay State"

The most populous state in New England, Massachusetts has always been at the forefront of social change, whether in its ties to the abolitionist movement early in the country's history or its legal recognition of gay marriage in 2004. The state's name is taken from the Native Americans who once widely populated the region and roughly translates to "by the blue hills," a reference to Great Blue Hill on the Blue Hills Reservation southwest of Boston. Bostonians, famous for their regional accent, make up the majority of Bay Staters, and the capital is the cultural and financial mecca of the state. The largest city in the region, it's even sometimes referred to as the "capital of New England."
Harvard University, in the Greater Boston area town of Cambridge, is one of the most respected institutions of higher learning in the world. Founded in 1643 by the legislature of Massachusetts Bay Colony, it's the country's oldest college. The university has helped make Massachusetts a nexus of power for much of the country's elite. The state has also given rise to two of the most historically powerful families in American politics, the Adams family (featuring Samuel, John, and John Quincy Adams) and the Kennedys (who included patriarch Joe and sons John Fitzgerald and Robert). To be sure, politics is an indelible part of the fabric of the state, which is still overwhelmingly Democractic, despite the recent election of the state's first Republican U.S. senator since 1972.
