Hawaii State Flower

Hawaii State Flower

Yellow Hibiscus (common name)
Hibiscus brackenridgei
(scientific name)

Overview

The hibiscus, in all colors and varieties, was designated the official "territorial flower" of Hawaii the early 1920s. In 1988 the strikingly beautiful yellow Hawaiian hibiscus was selected as the Hawaii state flower. The yellow hibiscus variety is one of seven native to the islands and is endangered in its wild habitats. Similar looking Chinese hybrids are popular ornamental shrubs in Hawaiian gardens as well. The distinctive yellow flowers with maroon centers open for a couple of hours in the late afternoon but otherwise remain closed. The shrub’s smooth tan trunks take on a wrinkled appearance as the plant ages.
