San Francisco
San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

San Francisco International Airport
Transportation to City Center
The airport lies 15 miles (25 km) from the city and has undergone massive development. Metered taxis cost approximately $35 for the 30-minute ride downtown. Shared rides are common and will ultimately cost the passenger less; up to five persons may ride for the price of one passenger. The airport requires that taxi drivers accept fares to all Bay Area destinations. Uniformed taxi coordinators that assist passengers with questions and problems are available at all terminals. Wheelchair passengers and those with disabilities can contact the Airport Curbside personnel on the Center Island between terminals. Between the hours of midnight and 6a.m., use the courtesy telephones next to the taxi zone.

AirTrain, the airport's complimentary automated people mover, takes passengers between terminals, garages, rental car center, and the airport BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station. BART connects passengers to downtown San Francisco, northern San Mateo County, and East Bay destinations. The station is located on the departures level of the International Terminal. It also connects passengers to CalTrain Commuter Rail, which provides service between San Francisco and San Jose, with weekday commute service to Gilroy. Its nearest airport stop is Millbrae, and it provides free shuttle transfer to airport terminals. CalTrain operates a once-hourly (two hourly during morning and afternoon rush hours) weekday service between 5a.m. and 11:59p.m. Saturday service starts at 7a.m., and Sunday service at 8a.m. until 10p.m. Passengers can connect from the BART to Caltrain systems at the Millbrae station.

Many bus/van operators also serve the city. Frequent services are run by Sam Trans (24-hour service to San Mateo County and parts of San Francisco and Palo Alto), [1] (800) 660-4287, and S.F.O. Airporter, [1] (800) 532-8405. A Sam Trans bus costs $2 to $3, the S.F.O. Airporter will cost $10, and door-to-door van services cost from $10 to $25, depending on pick-up or drop-off point. San Francisco city guides occasionally provide discount coupons for local transportation; look for them at information desks. Door-to-door van service is available to the following counties:  San Mateo, Santa Clara, Marin, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano. At the International terminal, vans depart from level 1 bus courtyards A and G. Vans depart from the domestic and old terminals from arrivals courtyards 1, 2, 3, and 4.
