Color and model of vehicles vary wildly--yellow sedans seem to be popular in most U.S. cities--but the lighted taxi dome on top of the vehicle is fairly universal. Virtually all cabs are metered, and most drivers are relaxed and honest about the fares. Do pay attention, though, as you would in any country. In rural and suburban areas, one may reserve taxis by telephone. Do not be surprised if you are separated from the driver by bullet-proof glass. Rarely is there a set price for extra baggage; the driver figures you will build that into the tip, which is normally 15 percent.
