Welcome to New Mexico

Welcome to New Mexico

"Land of Enchantment"

Diverse New Mexico has the largest Hispanic population of any U.S. state, at 45 percent, as well as the third largest population of Native Americans (mostly Navajo and Pueblo), at almost 10 percent. As a result, nearly 30 percent of New Mexico residents over age 5 speak Spanish in the home, and slightly over 4 percent speak Navajo. New Mexico's capital, Santa Fe, is only the fourth largest city in the state, but its cultural influence is widespread. Inspired by its Spanish Pueblo Revival architecture and a vibrant art scene, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has even designated it part of the Creative Cities Network.
Because of New Mexico's unique cultural landscape and enviably agreeable year-round weather, tourism is a major industry, generating $6.5 billion in 2006. Visitors flock to sites like Carlsbad Caverns and Aztec Ruins National Monument to experience awe-inducing examples of geological and cultural history. Still, the state is not a wealthy one: its average per capita income ranks only 43rd in the U.S., and the poverty level hovers slightly beneath 20 percent. To help stimulate job growth, the state government provides various tax incentives. For its part, Albuquerque, the state's largest city, boasts New Mexico's "Technology Corridor." The region is home to branches of high-tech companies like Sandia National Laboratories and government research facilities like Los Alamos National Laboratory, the birthplace of the atomic bomb.
