Welcome to Oregon

Welcome to Oregon

"The Beaver State"

The large evergreen tree on Oregon's current license plates belies the diversity of the state's many ecosystems. Yes, much of it is covered in trees, be they the redwoods along the mountainous coast or the pine of the eastern portion of the state. But, perhaps surprisingly, Oregon's terrain also includes semi-arid scrubland, meadows, and even deserts. Not surprisingly, the state's many trees are responsible for its massive logging and timber industry. But all those beautiful and profitable trees can cause problems, too—Oregon is the U.S. leader in forest fires.
Besides timber, Oregon's economy is fueled by high-tech industries and services, salmon fishing, agriculture (including cattle, dairy, and poultry)—and hazelnuts. Oregon produces 95 percent of the nation's hazelnuts, and is one of only four major hazelnut-producing regions in the world. Tourism is also a mainstay, although, despite all that wilderness, Oregon is home to only one national park: Crater Lake National Park, the sixth oldest in the country. While the state's population is a mix of conservative and liberal, non-religious and devout, most Oregonians will agree that Oregon's natural beauty is a major point of pride.
